It’s Technology Month at Guaranteed Irish, and the focus is on one of the most important ideas shaping modern business: digital trust. Digital trust is about having confidence in your digital reputation so you can thrive online, as customers increasingly judge businesses through their domain, website and email before ever making contact. As a proud Guaranteed Irish member, .IE is committed to strengthening trust and supporting Irish businesses in a digital-first world, where credibility must be earned every day.
1. We hear a lot about “digital trust” - what does that actually mean for a business today?
Digital trust is about having confidence in your digital reputation so you can thrive online.
For most businesses, your domain, website and email are now your front door. Customers are forming opinions before they ever speak to you. If something doesn’t look or feel quite right, they hesitate or simply move on.
We are seeing a clear shift in behaviour. Customers are more cautious. They double-check links, question emails, and think twice before entering payment details. Last year alone, social media platforms generated €32m in revenue from scam ads targeting Irish consumers, with average losses of over €1,500 per incident.
The reality is that trust online is no longer automatic. It has to be earned (and then re-earned) every day. That’s why we created Digital Trust .IE which gives businesses a simple way to understand how they appear to customers online and where they can improve.
2. What’s driving this change in how people trust businesses online?
Cybercriminals can now clone websites, replicate branding and create emails that look almost identical to legitimate businesses. For customers, it is becoming increasingly difficult to tell what is real and what is not.
That uncertainty affects all businesses, not just those directly targeted.
Our own research showed that almost one in five of Ireland’s top companies have experienced a significant cyber-attack in the last two years. Globally, a Mastercard survey found that 46% of SMEs have experienced a cyberattack, and nearly one in five affected businesses ultimately closed.
Even more telling, 80% said they had to spend time rebuilding trust with customers and partners afterwards.
So this isn’t just a technology issue, it’s a business risk. And once trust is lost, it’s much harder to win back than it is to protect in the first place.
3. So where should businesses focus if they want to build trust online?
The starting point is simpler than most people think.
Digital trust is built on three core elements:
- your domain — who you are online
- your website — what customers see and interact with
- your email — who is allowed to speak as you
If these are set up correctly, customers can engage with confidence. If not, it raises questions, even if everything looks fine on the surface.
These are often overlooked because they sit in the background, but they directly influence how credible your business appears.
There’s also a growing regulatory angle. The EU is placing increased focus on modern internet standards like email authentication and domain security under initiatives such as NIS2. For many SMEs, particularly those in the direct supply chains of businesses in scope, this will become increasingly relevant.
But fundamentally, this isn’t about compliance, it’s about making sure your business continues to develop your digital reputation.
4. You’ve launched the Digital Trust Mark — how does that help businesses in a practical way?
The Digital Trust Mark takes something quite complex and makes it simple.
It’s an evidence-based assessment where your domain, website and email are tested across 28 recognised standards. We often describe it as the equivalent of an NCT for your online presence.
The reason this matters is clear. Irish SMEs are losing close to €1 million a month to email-related fraud, particularly invoice redirection and impersonation scams.
Most businesses don’t realise where they are exposed until something goes wrong.
With Digital Trust .IE, you can complete an assessment in just a few clicks. You receive a clear score and, more importantly, practical steps to improve.
No technical expertise is required to apply and is available to any domain, not just .ie. You get visibility, and then you can work with your IT provider or partner to strengthen any weak points.
It turns something invisible into something manageable and gives you a way to show customers that you take your digital reputation seriously.
5. Looking ahead, what do you see as the key opportunities and challenges in strengthening trust and innovation in Ireland?
Trust is going to become one of the defining factors in how businesses compete online.
The challenge is as more services move digitally, customers will increasingly rely on signals to decide who they engage with. At the same time, technologies like AI will make it easier to create convincing fake content, making trust harder to establish.
The opportunity, however, is significant. Ireland already has a strong reputation as a trusted place to do business. If we can extend that into the digital space, it becomes a real competitive advantage.
At .IE, our focus is on making trust practical. Through initiatives like Digital Trust .IE, we are helping businesses take measurable and impactful steps to strengthen how they are perceived online.
6. What does being a Guaranteed Irish member represent for .IE?
Being part of Guaranteed Irish reflects a shared commitment to trust, quality and supporting Irish businesses.
As Bríd O’Connell said at this year’s awards, “a reputation for trust is vital.”
Today, trust is reinforced through clear, visible signals. The Guaranteed Irish symbol, a .ie domain, and the Digital Trust Mark together provide strong reassurance that a business is authentic, credible and operating to a high standard.
For customers, that makes decision-making easier.
For businesses, it reinforces the reputation they’ve worked hard to build.
And as more interactions move online, those signals will only become more important.
